The book sheds light on the cultural tensions and social contradictions that have shaped Lake Zurich and its shores over centuries, profoundly altering its ecosystems. Since the nineteenth century, rapid population growth, intensive resource use and industrial pollution have intensified the political struggles over access, reclamation and diverging models of environmental protection. Discussing the evolution of legal practices around private use of littoral zones, the book sheds a critical light on the legal and historical problems of land privatization around Switzerland’s most intensively used “natural” lake.
