The encyclopedia includes contributions of dozens of authors and covers a vast variety of topics in the history of globalizing science in early modern Japan. Centered on people, places, and transformative events, the compendium represents the culture of knowledge and knowledge production at the time as a dynamic process embedded in local and global discourses.

My contribution is an entry on the significance of “honzō” botanics in the colonization of the Ogasawara (Bonin) islands under the Tokugawa shogunate in the 1860s. A moment of scientific innovation, the process of inventorying a newly incorporated maritime territory helped establish new standards in cartography and raised questions of territorial claims based on natural history.
